 Female Matrona 62 Tanzania

Matrona was born in the Kitunga village and is a farmer. She grows maize and rice for food and wheat and ground nuts to sell. She is married and has 6 children. She also has 2 grandchildren who she stays with.

“I have not experienced age discrimination myself but many older women have. They have had their land grabbed, been killed or not been respected. When older women make contributions in meetings people boo them, people don’t want to listen to them.”

Why do you think you are not discriminated against?

“I think I am not discriminated against because I have been in leadership roles since I was young. As a leader they couldn’t treat me unfairly because once they do I can the issue up. I don’t know how I came to be in these leadership roles, people were just electing me. Maybe because I had an education and most older people don’t.”

“I feel very bad when I see other older women being treated unfairly but this is declining because we stood up against them. We are happy the village and religious leaders work hand in hand with us and the rights of older people.”

“Now I feel more empowered than when I was younger. I am more knowledgeable. I have my own property which I didn’t have and I can be trusted. I can lead the whole village because of the project.”

“Age is one of the things that make me a leader. When I was younger I was leading the youth but now I can lead both because of my age. The youth respect me. I
